What is the team structure in an Australian Medical Practice?
As a consultant you will report to the department Director, and be responsible for supervising junior staff. Nursing staff are seen as an integral part of the team in Australia, and are educated and trained to a high level.

What restrictions are there on working in Australia as an international medical graduate?
As an anaesthetist, there are few restrictions on where you can practice, provided you are working in the public medical system. If you wish to work in a private hospital, or private practice there may be geographical limitations.

What types of positions are available?
Most anaesthetists are employed as ‘staff specialists’, a salaried employee of the hospital. You may also be appointed as a ‘visiting medical officer’ (VMO), essentially a contractor to the facility. You may be paid at an hourly rate, or on a per-consultation basis in this case.

Who are my potential employers?
As an anaesthetist, your employment will most likely be in a state-funded public hospital, private hospital, or part of a specialist group.
