Emergency Locum Murali Krishnaraj

Murali completed his undergraduate degree in India before moving to Australia ten years ago where he is now due to complete his emergency fellowship in January at a tertiary outer-metro Sydney hospital.
After originally working at Wollongong Hospital, Murali transferred to Sydney four years ago to complete his fellowship. “I really liked this hospital, I was from Wollongong, but the facilities and access to training were much better [here]”.
“It wasn’t an easy transition into Sydney, but it didn’t take long to settle in, now we have been here for a few years we are used to it, and really enjoy it.”
Emergency. The name says it all, so it comes as no surprise that Krishnaraj is required to work shift work. His roster covers day shifts (8am – 6pm); evening (2pm – midnight) and nights (11pm – 9.30am), a routine not for the faint hearted.
As a candidate with Beat Medical for the past two years, Murali has also been able to work in various hospitals throughout New South Wales and Interstate.
Although much of the work is routine, he does admit “in Emergency there is a lot of good … and bad”.
Having had the opportunity to work in both the Indian and Australian healthcare system, it was interesting to hear his thoughts on the two and their culture “Although it has been quite some time since I worked in an Indian hospital, there is quite a difference in Emergency medicine and facilities. Although, the medical conditions have improved a lot in recent years, they are still a long way off from where Australia is at, but it’s definitely an improvement”
After living in Australia for the past ten years with his wife and kids, Murali hopes to continue his career in Sydney “we have been here for a long time and settled in, but we do go back to India at least once a year to see our family and friends”.
Moving forward, the main focus for Murali “is to complete my fellowship to become a staff specialist and consultant”. Life after his fellowship? He laughs, “After that, we will have to see”.
