Application Pathways

The regulatory bodies

The Australian medical system is governed by a somewhat confusing array of government, and non-government organisations. Your recruitment agency can submit most of the applications on your behalf to save you the time and hassle.

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) oversees the entry of international medical graduates (IMGs) into the Australian system. Their role is to ensure you hold the appropriate qualifications and experience for your intended path of entry. They do not make any decisions about specialist recognition, medical registration, or working visas. The AMC is your starting point for working in Australia. You will be required to submit documentation relating to your professional qualifications, and English language competency.

There are a number of ‘pathways’ available to enter the Australian system. The recommended pathway for most GPs is the specialist pathway. Under this pathway, the AMC will initially assess your application, then pass it onto the specialty college for review.

Depending on the college decision, you may be admitted as a fellow of the college without further conditions, or may need to fulfill a requirement to complete further training or examinations.

How do I know if I am eligible for specialist recognition with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)?

In short, if you hold one of these qualifications you can apply for ad eundem fellowship of the RACGP.
