How long before coming to Australia to work as a GP should I start the process?
At least six months. It is best to do things as early as possible, so you would ideally get in touch with us now to talk through your individual situation.

What is the best way to find a GP job in Australia?
There are many different ways to approach it, but for a high level of professional support we recommend you choose a single medical recruitment agency to guide you through such a major life change.

What is the minimum length of time I can work as a GP in Australia for?
Most GP employers will not consider an application which is less than six months, and most prefer candidates who commit to twelve months.

The health system in Australia is largely a government funded, public healthcare system. Consultations with a general practitioner are paid for by the Medicare system, with some medical practices charging a higher rate, requiring the patient to pay a ‘gap’ fee

What is the team structure in an Australian Medical Practice?
Although it varies from facility to facility, there will generally be a senior consultant who is the nominated Principal (who usually owns the practice). There are generally other GPs, practice nurses, allied health, and administrative staff. There are sometimes pharmacies co-located with medical practices.

What restrictions are there on working in Australia as an international medical graduate?
There are some restrictions as to location for overseas trained GPs, for example you will most likely not be permitted to work in a major metropolitan area – however will be eligible to work in many fantastic regional and rural areas of Australia. You may hear the term District of Workforce Shortage (DWS), which the geographical zone that overseas trained doctors may work.

What types of positions are available?
Depending on the location you choose to live, there may be a few options available to you- ranging from a ‘9-5’ position, to a job with admitting rights at a local hospital.

Who are my potential employers?
As a general practitioner, your employment will most likely be in a privately owned medical practice. There are some opportunities available in government health centres, particularly in indigenous health.
