Getting started as a Specialist Doctor in Australia

Although the market is flooded with specialist positions, with so much to choose from it can be hard to sort the ‘good’ from the ‘bad’. It can be a frustrating and bewildering path to having your qualifications recognised, choosing a location, obtaining a working visa, and finding the right position.

Although it is an option to submit applications directly to employers, most overseas trained specialists find that it is a much simpler process with professional support, especially given the number of professional bodies you need to liaise with to become registered to work in Australia.

By working with a recruitment agency to find a medical position, you will have access to the ‘hidden’ employment market - jobs that are not advertised publicly, giving you a greater choice of where to work and live.

As a doctor qualified in the UK, NZ, USA, Canada, or Ireland, your training may be categorised as substantially comparable, this giving you a fast track into the system. Graduates from other systems may be eligible for partial comparability. Whichever category you fall into, it is crucial to have professional support from someone who knows and understands the accreditation system.
